ETS Research: Who We Are and What We Do. Research in Support of Next-Generation Assessments
In this presentation, I'll give an overview of the Research Division at ETS, its mission, its structure, and its current research projects. In the second part of the presentation, I'll talk about the next generation assessments and the work undergoing in the Center for Advanced Pyschometrics at ETS. I'll also talk about the changes in the field of psychometrics as I see them and their implications for students and job applicants. The presentation will conclude with a description of a Collaborative Science Assess-ment, The Tetralogue, and the research conducted in its support. Specifically, we've been actively involved with the assessment of cognitive skills through collaborative problem solving tasks and with the assessment of collaborative skills. We've considered stochastic process models to account for the interdependence between the actions or discourse of the team members. The work is still in progress.
Alina Von Davier is a Senior Research Director and leader of the Center for Advanced Psychometrics at ETS and an Adjunct Professor at Fordham University. She earned her PhD in mathematics at the Otto von Guericke University of Magdeburg, Germany, and her MS in mathematics from the University of Bucharest, Romania. At ETS, von Davier is responsible for developing a team of experts and a psychometric research agenda in support of next-generation assessments. She also is responsible for fostering research relationships between ETS and the psychometric field, nationally and internationally. During her tenure at ETS she led the Center for Psychometrics International Tests, where she managed a large group of scientists and was responsible for the scores reported to about a million test takers annually. She edited a volume on test equating, Statistical Models for Test Equating, Scaling, and Linking, the 2013 winner of the Division D Significant Contribution to Educational Measurement and Research Methodology award. She serves as an Associate Editor for Psychometrika and the Journal of Educational Measurement. Prior to joining ETS, she worked in Germany at the Universities of Trier, Magdeburg, Kiel, and Jena, and at the ZUMA in Mannheim; and in Romania, at the Institute of Psychology of the Romanian Academy.
